The M4 Sherman was the basic American medium tank of World War II. Produced between 1942 and 1945, it became the most recognizable Allied tank. During the war, it was constantly improved. It was equipped with a 75 mm gun. Insufficient armament and a flammable engine initially made the Sherman an easy target for heavier German tanks. It was only after refining the design that the roles were reversed. A total of approximately 49,000 units of all Sherman versions were produced. The tank was used by, among others, the armies of the USA, Great Britain, Poland, France, and the USSR. It enjoyed a reputation as a reliable, easy-to-manufacture, and well-armed tank.
